More About Bandura’s Social Learning Theory

Social learning theory is a concept that one learns by watching and mimicking others,in particular acquired by observing and imitating others those that are important in their lives. The process of observational learning may take place in shared places like schools, workplaces,or even with your loved ones. It can be either positive or negative. Your mental state can play a role in whether or not you mimic somebody else.,

,

This theory is based on operant and classical conditioning but differs in that it focuses not just on internal processes but also the surrounding environment. This is different from classical and operant conditioning that are more focused on the relationship between stimulus and response.,

,

Albert Bandura,a psychologist in the 1960s,came up with the social learning theory after several experiments, including the Bobo doll test. The experiment proved that children are able to imitate the behaviour of the adults they observe even without being directly instructed to do it. He was of the opinion that the most popular models of reinforcement did not fully account for the effects of the social environment and that was a major reason people behave differently in different environments.,

,

Teachers can implement the principles of social learning theories in the classroom by reinforcing good behavior and removing undesirable ones. The use of rewards is a method of enticing students to be involved in class discussions, complete assignments, and follow the rules of the class. One way to motivate students is to model appropriate behaviour and boosting their self-confidence. This can be useful in encouraging students to become more compassionate and respectful towards their peers.,

,

The ability to learn is not only from watching their peers’ behaviour in order to avoid or cope with stress. Vicarious learning is a useful option for people struggling with depression and anxiety. However,it’s essential to be wary of this type of learning since it could cause imitation of negative behaviors, such as aggressiveness and violence.,

,

At work, workers tend to follow the example of their colleagues. This can be done in order to gain attention or to be a part of the group however it could also be a method for employees to discover the kind of behavior that is appreciated by their bosses. This could be a problem if your company culture discourages the kind of behavior you’re describing.,

,

This theory can be a reason for why people are more likely to engage reckless behavior. It is a reason why people might take drugs or smoke after seeing their friends do it,or view violent videos and imitate aggression in the media. The 2021 research shows that there are other factors that impact the people’s willingness to engage risky behavior. Social learning is just one of them.,

,

The theory can help clarify why people behave differently in different environments, but it can be difficult to implement. There are times when people face internal conflicts whenever they adopt new behavior that contradict their beliefs and values. Teachers can help address this by helping students understand their values and beliefs and in encouraging them to think of new ways to live their lives accordance with their values.,
